Lomachenko’s WBO junior lightweight
Vasyl Lomachenko vs Miguel Marriaga
Date: Saturday, August 5, 2017
TIME: 10 p.m. ET
Venue: Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES — From the day Vasyl Lomachenko turned professional in 2013 following perhaps the greatest amateur boxing career in history, a run that included a 396-1 record (loss avenged) and Olympic gold medals for Ukraine in 2008 and 2012, his biggest motivation was to make boxing history.
Vasyl Lomachenko and Miguel Marriaga face off this weekend in a rather unexpected match-up. Lomachenko was planning to face off against his only loss, Orlando Salido, to avenge his 2014 defeat. Top Rank, however, claimed that they wanted Salido but he was requesting too much money, a report that Salido and his camp has denied. Lomachenko, however, will be headlining against Marriaga nonetheless. Marriaga is coming off of a loss, but Lomachenko isn’t downplaying him either.
Lomachenko isn’t a prizefighter as much as he’s an artist who uses the canvas of the ring to paint his masterpieces. He always appears to be one step ahead of his opponents, not just physically in terms of his unmatched footwork, but even more so mentally.
